Technical Guide: VPNs vs. Proxies for Recording

To bypass geographic restrictions or improve capture privacy, you often need to route your traffic through another location. In CaptureGem, you have two primary options: a System VPN or Proxy Mode.

Comparison at a Glance

OverheadHigh (Encryption/Routing)Low (Direct Tunnel)

ReliabilityVariable (Kill-switches)High (App-Native)

Proxy Mode is a specialized feature where CaptureGem routes the stream discovery and download through a specific local or remote proxy server (often configured via Chrome).

  • Benefit: It only affects the stream traffic. Your other apps (browser, Discord, games) continue to use your standard high-speed connection.
  • Efficiency: Because only the capture engine is routed, you experience much lower CPU and latency overhead than a full VPN.

2) When to Use a System VPN

A system-wide VPN (like NordVPN or Mullvad) encrypts every packet leaving your machine.

  • Privacy: Best if you want your entire OS footprint to be hidden from your ISP.
  • Ease of Use: No need to configure specific proxy strings in CaptureGem; you just turn it on and every recording is automatically routed.
  • The Risk: If the VPN disconnects, Auto-Record might fail or leak your real IP unless a strict “Kill-switch” is enabled.

3) Technical Requirements

If you choose to use a VPN with CaptureGem, ensure it supports:

  • Split-Tunneling: So you can exclude non-recording apps from the VPN.
  • High-Speed UDP: Essential for 1080p and VR streams to avoid buffering.

4) Latency & Go-Live Detection

Routing your traffic through a distant country (e.g., USA to Japan) adds latency. This can slightly delay “Go-Live” detection. For the fastest response, choose a VPN/Proxy server as close to the target site’s ingest server as possible.

Summary

For most users, Proxy Mode is the superior choice for performance and targeted routing. Use a System VPN only if you require total OS privacy and have the hardware overhead to spare.
