Can CaptureGem run without a desktop?
CaptureGem’s normal desktop workflow needs a graphical session. It does not provide a capturegem-service --headless command or a customer-facing headless configuration file. On Linux x86_64, however, CaptureGem supports running the bundled recorderd binary without the desktop. The official standalone Linux guide covers extraction from the AppImage, matching binaries, startup, and a per-user systemd service.
For unattended desktop recording, keep the app running in a logged-in session, choose Record Always or Record With Expiry for models you want saved automatically, and prevent the machine from sleeping. Check that finished-video and temporary folders have space, and inspect interrupted recordings after a restart.
For standalone Linux use, keep the daemon’s HTTP and proxy ports private: they do not authenticate requests. Follow the official guide’s firewall and local-control instructions before enabling a service. The first recording guide covers normal desktop setup.
