CaptureGem recording and configuration folders
CaptureGem has a desktop process and a recorder daemon that each select a data folder. New macOS profiles use ~/Library/Application Support/capturegem; new Windows profiles use %LOCALAPPDATA%\capturegem; Linux uses ~/CaptureGem_Data. The daemon defaults to <daemon data folder>/videos/out for finished videos and <daemon data folder>/videos/tmp-hls for temporary HLS media.
Older macOS installs may use ~/CaptureGem_Data; older Windows installs may use a folder beside the executable. When both old and new locations contain settings, the desktop process chooses the location with the newer config.json or viewState.json marker, but the recorder daemon still chooses the legacy location whenever it has a config.json. This can split the UI and recording configuration across two folders. An explicit CAPTUREGEM_DATA_DIR override makes both processes use the same path. Check both candidate folders and the app/daemon logs before moving, backing up, or resetting files. Custom folders in Settings can also override the media defaults.
Back up the relevant config.json files and verified finished videos before a reset or move. Leave temporary and retained source files in place when a recording is incomplete or conversion failed. See troubleshooting.
